Two Additional Arrests Made in the Torture and Murder Case of Transgender Man in New York

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — In an ongoing investigation that has disturbed the Finger Lakes community, New York State Police have apprehended two additional suspects in connection with the murder of a transgender man. The suspects, identified as Kimberly Sochia, 29, of Canandaigua, and Thomas Eaves, 21, of Geneva, were arrested Thursday and face charges of second-degree murder.

Earlier, authorities had charged five individuals in the tragic death of 24-year-old Sam Nordquist, whose body was discovered in a rural field earlier this month. According to police, Nordquist endured prolonged violence and torture over a period exceeding one month.

Sochia and Eaves have been detained and are awaiting arraignment. Details regarding their legal representation were not available at the time of this report, and efforts to reach the public defender’s office for comment have gone unanswered.

Sam Nordquist, originally from Minnesota, had relocated to the scenic region of Finger Lakes last September. He was reported missing since February 9. Authorities have described a harrowing scene in which Nordquist was allegedly targeted by a group of acquaintances within the LGBTQ+ community, leading to his brutal demise. Despite the nature of this brutal act, investigators have found no evidence suggesting that the murder was motivated by hate towards Nordquist’s transgender identity.

The local community has reacted with shock and grief given the severity of the crime. As the case unfolds, officials are calling for thorough investigations, and victim advocacy groups are highlighting the need for greater protections for transgender individuals, particularly in small community settings where resources and support may be lacking.

The arrests bring the total to seven suspects implicated in Nordquist’s death, highlighting a concerning trend of violence in what is known to be an otherwise serene area. The case continues to develop as more details emerge from police investigations, and community members await justice for Nordquist, whose tragic end has sparked calls for addressing violence against transgender persons comprehensively and effectively.
