Two Arrested in Connection with Brutal Assault at Richland County Restaurant

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. – Authorities have apprehended two individuals linked to a brutal attack at Concept Restaurant in Richland County last month, signaling swift action by law enforcement in response to community concerns.

The suspects, identified as 37-year-old Clifton Bookert and 23-year-old Michael Alexander James, reportedly played distinct roles in the violent incident on March 16, 2025, which resulted in serious injuries to the victim. Following an assault that evening, local law enforcement was alerted and promptly responded to the scene at around 8:00 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers discovered one individual who had been severely beaten by the assailants. This victim was urgently transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment of multiple injuries sustained during the assault. Efforts to capture the suspects initially hit a snag as they had already fled the area by the time deputies reached the restaurant.

In the aftermath of the crime, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department employed various resources to aid in their investigation, including releasing surveillance footage of the assault on April 3. This footage played a crucial role, as it prompted Clifton Bookert to surrender to authorities later that day. Charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, Bookert was processed at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and later released.

The search for the second suspect concluded when Michael Alexander James turned himself in after authorities released his identity and image to the public on April 9. James now faces charges similar to those of Bookert.

The swift arrests following the release of the surveillance video highlight the vital role that community and law enforcement collaboration plays in addressing violent crimes. Moreover, these incidents bring forth the discussion about safety measures and preventive strategies in public spaces, such as enhanced surveillance and quicker emergency response protocols.
