Two Found Dead In San Jose State Parking Garage

Campus police said the man and woman were not connected to the university.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A man and a woman were found dead Saturday afternoon inside a vehicle at San Jose State University’s West Garage, where campus police and firefighters responded after a report of two unresponsive people.

San Jose State University police said officers were called just after 2 p.m. to the garage at 350 S. Fourth St. Firefighters tried CPR, but both people were pronounced dead at 2:20 p.m. Officials said the deaths remain under investigation.

The pair had not been publicly identified as of Sunday afternoon. San Jose State police said they were not students, employees or otherwise affiliated with the university. Capt. Jermaine Thomas said investigators were not looking for suspects and did not believe there was a threat to the campus community.

Thomas said the first report came after someone noticed the two people in the vehicle earlier in the day and later became concerned when they were still there. Officers arrived, made contact and began medical aid before firefighters took over, he said.

Authorities have not released the cause or manner of death. Police said they were reviewing campus surveillance video and other evidence from the garage. The identities of the man and woman were being withheld while officials worked to notify relatives.

The West Garage is a public parking structure on the edge of the downtown San Jose campus. The discovery came after spring classes had ended and while the campus was quieter than usual, though people were still in the area for weekend events nearby.

Some students and recent graduates said the deaths were unsettling because the garage is commonly used by commuters and visitors. One recent graduate said she had parked there Saturday while attending an event downtown and was surprised to learn what had happened.

The investigation remained open Sunday. Police said more information would depend on the medical examiner’s findings and the review of evidence from the scene.
