The Vance County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 9:40 p.m. Monday to Torri Drive.
HENDERSON, North Carolina — Two teenagers, ages 13 and 17, were found dead Monday night at a home in Henderson, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office said, as deputies opened a death investigation and urged anyone with information to come forward.
The call came in about 9:40 p.m. for a home in the 70 block of Torri Drive. Deputies arrived and located the two juveniles, who were pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. By Tuesday, authorities had not released the teens’ names, their relationship, or any information about how they died. The sheriff’s office said only that the case remains under active investigation.
Residents in the neighborhood described a sudden flood of emergency vehicles late Monday and a law enforcement presence that lasted through the night. Jennifer Brust, who lives nearby, said the first sign of trouble was the number of first responders arriving on the street. “We saw probably two fire trucks, three ambulances, lots of cops,” Brust said. She said that until then, neighbors did not realize anything unusual was happening inside the home.
Brust said she did not hear anything out of the ordinary Monday evening and called the situation traumatic for the neighborhood. “Terrible. We’re shaken,” she said, adding that she had never seen anything like it in the area. Neighbors said deputies remained on scene overnight and into Tuesday morning, then began leaving later in the morning. Officials have not said whether the home was treated as a secured crime scene, whether investigators searched for weapons, or whether they recovered surveillance video from the area.
The sheriff’s office has not described what kind of call brought deputies to the address, such as a welfare concern or a report of violence, and officials have not said whether anyone else was in the home when deputies arrived. Authorities also have not said whether they believe the teens died at the home or were found there after dying elsewhere. Any autopsy plans and results have not been discussed publicly, and investigators have not provided a timeline for when more information may be released.
On Tuesday afternoon, Sheriff Curtis Brame told a local television station that there was “no update” on the investigation. Vance County Manager C. Renee Perry declined to comment to the station when asked questions about the case. The limited public information left neighbors piecing together what they had observed in recent days, including the last time they saw the teenagers outside.
Brust said she last saw the teens on Saturday, when snow brought many children outdoors in the neighborhood. She described the family as private and said she rarely saw an adult at the home. “They stayed away from everybody,” Brust said. She recalled seeing the kids outside playing in the snow and riding bikes. Officials have not confirmed family details or said whether relatives were present at the time deputies arrived. Authorities also have not addressed whether next-of-kin notifications are complete.
The deaths occurred against a backdrop of public concern in Henderson after a series of shootings earlier this year. City officials issued a temporary curfew last month following multiple shootings over several days, including incidents involving children. On Jan. 20, local reports described at least four separate shooting incidents in Henderson, including one in which three people were shot, among them a 7-month-old baby. Investigators have not indicated any connection between those incidents and the deaths on Torri Drive.
Authorities have asked for the public’s help as they work to establish what happened. Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the Vance County Sheriff’s Office at 252-738-2200 or Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925. Officials said tips can also be submitted anonymously through the P3 Tips mobile application. Investigators have not announced any arrests, and they have not said whether they are seeking suspects or persons of interest.
As of Wednesday, officials said the investigation remained active and that additional details were not available. The next major steps are expected to include autopsy findings, continued interviews, and a review of any records or evidence tied to the home and the teens’ last known activities.
