Two Students Fatally Injured After Shawnee Mission South Prom

OVERLAND PARK, KS – Heartbreak has swept through the community of Overland Park following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of two teenagers. The crash occurred late Saturday night, shortly after the high school prom, leaving the families and friends of the victims grappling with an unimaginable loss.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the collision happened just before 11:30 p.m. on U.S. Route 69. Jose Ponce, 17, was driving southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control and crossed the median. The car collided head-on with another vehicle, only eight minutes away from the teenagers’ home.

Eighteen-year-old Isau Guerra, a senior at Shawnee Mission South High School, was in the passenger seat. Guerra had a bright future ahead, with plans to graduate in May and attend Johnson County Community College. She was known for her love of working with children and had been employed at the Primrose School of Prairie Village.

Jose Ponce, a junior at the same high school, was remembered by his brother, Raul, as a compassionate and supportive individual. Raul shared that Jose always prioritized others’ well-being and had a significant impact on those around him. The sudden loss is a heavy blow to the community, which is now mourning the loss of two promising young lives.

Brianna Shockley, a close family friend, received a distressing alert on her phone that night, indicating that Isau had been in an accident. Shockley recalled fond memories of Isau singing and dancing with her mother, emphasizing the joy she brought to those who knew her.

The Shawnee Mission South High School principal expressed condolences to the families, urging the community to unite in support as they navigate their grief. The school has made counselors available for students and staff needing support during this difficult time.

While the investigation continues, authorities confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. However, the road was wet, and neither teenager was wearing a seatbelt. The two women in the other car sustained injuries but are expected to recover.

The tragedy has left the Overland Park community in mourning, as they come together to honor the memories of Isau Guerra and Jose Ponce. Their impact on the lives they touched will not be forgotten.
