Detectives are seeking answers after the victims were discovered at an industrial property near downtown late Wednesday.
DELAND, Fla. — Police are investigating a double homicide after two young men were found shot multiple times at an industrial property near downtown DeLand late Wednesday night.
Officers were sent to 213 W. New York Ave. at about 10:40 p.m. following a report that two people were dead, according to the DeLand Police Department. Officers found both victims at the property and pronounced them dead at 10:48 p.m.
Police identified the victims as Dustin Rose, 19, and Samson Campbell, 18. Investigators said the young men appeared to know each other, but authorities have not released further details about their relationship or why they were at the property.
The Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is leading the case. No suspect has been publicly identified, and police have not announced any arrests. Investigators also have not released a possible motive or said whether they believe the victims were specifically targeted.
Authorities described the location as a separate industrial property on West New York Avenue. Police corrected early reports that placed the crime scene on property belonging to the nearby Athens Theatre.
The department released a surveillance image that it said showed the last known sighting of Rose and Campbell. Police said the image was recorded at about 6 p.m. Tuesday, more than a day before officers found their bodies Wednesday night.
Rose was a student at The Citadel in South Carolina and served in the National Guard, police said. Authorities identified Campbell as a DeLand resident. Additional verified information about the victims was not immediately released by the department.
Police Chief Jason Umberger expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and said investigators were working to determine what happened. Detectives continued reviewing evidence and attempting to establish the men’s movements before the shootings.
The department asked anyone who saw unusual activity in the area or had contact with Rose or Campbell between Tuesday evening and Wednesday night to speak with investigators. Information may be provided to the DeLand Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 386-626-7400 or through its Crime Watch page.
The investigation remained active Friday. Police said additional information would be released as evidence is evaluated, but no timeline for another update was announced.
