Zhovkva, Ukraine — A Ukrainian draft officer was seriously wounded during an assault while performing his duties on Friday, February 17. According to local authorities, the officer was escorting two recently mobilized men to a medical check-up in Zhovkva, a city in the Lviv Oblast, when the attack occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. local time.
The assailants, who remain unidentified and are still at large, attacked the officer, causing multiple lacerations with a sharp object, as reported by the Lviv Oblast Territorial Recruitment Center. The condition of the injured officer has not been disclosed as investigations continue.
Officials have launched a criminal investigation into the incident and suggest that the motive may have been to facilitate the escape of one of the draftees. This recent attack adds to a growing list of violent incidents targeting military personnel involved in conscription duties across Ukraine.
Just days earlier, on February 12, another incident occurred in Kharkiv where an attack at a military enlistment office left a Ukrainian Armed Forces service member injured. Furthermore, on February 1, an explosive device was detonated at a draft office in Rivne, resulting in injuries to eight service members and the death of the suspected bomber—an attack later attributed to a person recruited by Russian forces, according to Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).
In a separate but equally alarming event, a draft officer was fatally shot in Poltava Oblast on January 31. The suspect in this case was apprehended shortly after the assault.
In response to these attacks, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has strongly condemned the violence and urged for a thorough investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators. These incidents come at a critical time as Ukraine continues to face significant challenges in mobilizing troops amid ongoing losses on the battlefield. The situation is further complicated by the need to provide relief to soldiers who have been continuously engaged since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

On the same day of the attack in Zhovkva, key developments suggested a hardening of positions in peace talks, with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov ruling out any territorial concessions. Meanwhile, a source from the SBU reported that Ukraine had targeted the Ilsky Oil Refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai.
Additionally, discussions in international defense circles suggest plans are underway for a possible deployment of up to 30,000 European troops to monitor a ceasefire in Ukraine, highlighting the international dimensions and implications of the conflict.
