Uptown Charlotte Shooting Claims Life of Club Employee Arleigh Bryant; Two Arrests Made as Community Grieves

Charlotte, N.C. — A shooting near Encore Nightclub has left one man dead and several others injured, reigniting concerns about gun violence in the city’s nightlife district. Authorities have confirmed the victim as 37-year-old Arleigh Bryant, who was known for his dedication as a father and an employee at the nightclub.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning around 2 a.m. in the First Ward area of Uptown Charlotte. In the wake of the shooting, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police announced they have made two arrests connected to the case, although the suspects’ names were not initially disclosed. Subsequent investigation linked Damien Evans Jr., 25, and Shawn Cannon, 24, to the crime. Evans faces charges of possessing a firearm as a felon and having a stolen gun, while Cannon is charged similarly but also faces additional counts, including eluding arrest and being an accessory after the fact. Evans is being held without bond, and Cannon’s bail has been set at $3 million.

During a press briefing, CMPD Deputy Chief Ryan Butler expressed outrage at the violence. “What happened that night shows a level of callousness that we simply cannot accept,” he said. While neither suspect has been charged with murder, the investigation remains open, and further charges could potentially arise as authorities continue their inquiry.

At least five other individuals were injured in the incident, including a 32-year-old woman and several men aged 19, 25, and 29. Their specific conditions have not been disclosed. Authorities say that the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, with no indication of whether Bryant was specifically targeted. Additionally, police recovered seven firearms from the scene, signaling the severity of the situation.

The city of Charlotte has been grappling with increasing instances of gun violence, particularly in popular nightlife areas. Just a day before this shooting, another attack left one person critically injured in the same vicinity. Local leaders, including City Councilmember Edwin Peacock III, have stressed the need for effective law enforcement strategies to prevent further incidents. “We want to ensure that our community feels secure and that police are prepared for any situation,” he stated.

Encore Nightclub has issued a statement expressing its condolences for Bryant’s loss. The nightclub assured that the shooting was not related to any altercations occurring within its premises, which have a significant security presence, particularly on weekends. The establishment is cooperating fully with the police investigation and hopes to provide clarity as the facts emerge.

To combat the growing threat of violence, former FBI agent M. Quentin Williams suggested several preventative measures, including improving outdoor lighting, adding surveillance cameras, and increasing the presence of off-duty officers in the area. “It’s critical to adapt to the changing dynamics of conflict resolution in public spaces,” he remarked.

Community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to enhance public safety. CMPD has committed to maintaining a strong police presence in the area, surveilling both day and night to discourage further violence.
