Uptown Tragedy: Court Sets $1.5 Million Bond for Suspects in Fatal Shooting of Young Army Vet and LSU Student

NEW ORLEANS — Two young men from St. Bernard Parish were arraigned Tuesday on charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder following a violent incident that claimed the life of 20-year-old Colby Scheffler in New Orleans’ Uptown neighborhood early Sunday. Harry Darby, 19, and Julian Vicknair, 18, who made their initial court appearances in Orleans Criminal Court, each had their bond set at $1.5 million.

Scheffler, who was tragically killed in a shooting that occurred in the 7700 block of Willow Street, was described by family and friends as having a promising future. Recently accepted at Louisiana State University to study engineering, the young man was also remembered as a U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of Chalmette High School.

Emotions ran high online as loved ones expressed their grief. One particularly poignant message from Scheffler’s grandfather mentioned a “horrible crater” left in the hearts of the family, reflecting the profound pain that accompanies such a sudden loss.

The chaos followed what appeared to be a routine outing, as Scheffler and two others were traveling through Uptown New Orleans when the unexpected gunfire broke out. According to local residents, the pandemonium continued as a vehicle involved in the incident ended up colliding with parked cars near the intersection of Willow and Burdette Streets.

Emergency responders pronounced Scheffler dead at the scene, and another individual, also hit by gunfire, was rushed to a local hospital but is expected to survive.

The swift response by law enforcement led to the apprehension of Darby and Vicknair in Violet on Monday, with both individuals being booked into the Orleans Parish Jail soon after. During their court appearance, a judge went a step further by mandating round-the-clock ankle monitoring for each of the accused, ensuring close supervision.

The community and investigators remain rattled by the events, with many questions still looming about the motive behind the shooting and whether Scheffler and the others were intentionally targeted. As the authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the violent event, they are calling on anyone with information to come forward and assist by reaching out to the New Orleans Police Department or Crimestoppers.

A subsequent hearing is planned for Friday as part of ongoing judicial proceedings, which could offer more insights into this distressing case and provide some degree of closure to a community in mourning.

Local residents and observers alike are urged to remain engaged and provide any assistance they can to help solve this case, as the fight for justice for Scheffler and the protection of the community continues.
