China – A significant safety alert has been issued regarding portable adult bed rails that pose a serious risk of asphyxiation. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced recalls for two brands due to their failure to meet established safety standards, highlighting potential dangers to users.
The recalled products include models from Beloems and Fortemotus, with both brands sold through Amazon. The CPSC reported that the bed rails could entrap individuals between the rail and the mattress, leading to suffocation risks. Moreover, concerns extend beyond entrapment; inadequate structural stability and improperly sized push pins raise additional fall and laceration hazards.
Specifically, Beloems has recalled approximately 800 units of their model BL-BR201, available from June to October 2025 at a price of about $90. The bed rails feature white metal tubing with black or gray foam rubber grips and support legs. Owners are advised to render their products unusable by cutting the foam padding, marking them as “recalled,” and submitting photographic evidence to receive a refund.
Similarly, Fortemotus has pulled 550 units of model USFTMTJAS008 from the market. These rails, sold from August to October 2025 for around $100, exhibit black tubing and grips. Like Beloems customers, Fortemotus owners should destroy the foam padding and send a picture of the damaged item for reimbursement.
The CPSC has consistently warned about the dangers of portable adult bed rails, citing multiple fatalities linked to similar products in previous years. A warning issued in January highlighted a recall of 10,600 CanFord bed rails and another involving 26,200 units from Sangohe. These recalls follow a troubling trend as the agency aims to enhance consumer safety amid reported incidents.
In a particularly tragic case, a nursing home resident in Pennsylvania passed away in late 2021 after becoming entrapped by portable bed rails. The CPSC has been actively addressing safety concerns, particularly since new regulations were established requiring that all adult portable bed rails manufactured after August 21, 2023, adhere to stringent safety standards.
This ongoing process signifies a proactive approach by the CPSC to mitigate risks associated with products designed for vulnerable populations. The agency continues to monitor and address the potential hazards posed by bed rail products, underlining the importance of consumer vigilance and compliance with safety recalls.
