Newark, New Jersey — In a case highlighting the dangers of vigilante actions, two residents were convicted of murder stemming from a violent incident involving a stolen luxury SUV. The Essex County jury found 33-year-old James Headen and 51-year-old Felicia Bynum guilty of multiple charges, including murder and conspiracy, after they chased the vehicle and opened fire on it.
The events unfolded on August 17, 2023, when Headen and Bynum spotted a 2022 white Lexus allegedly involved in a string of robberies. Fueled by a desire for what prosecutors termed “vigilante justice,” they pursued the vehicle through Newark’s South Ward. The situation escalated as Headen and Bynum fired at the Lexus, leading to the tragic death of 17-year-old Kiman Mays, who was a passenger in the vehicle.
Kiman Mays, a Newark resident, was killed during the exchange of gunfire. A second passenger, 21-year-old Yusuf Julious from Bound Brook, was unharmed, while the 29-year-old driver, Lonell Carruthers of Irvington, sustained injuries. Both Carruthers and Julious now face multiple charges for their alleged criminal activities that night, including robbery and weapons offenses.
