Karim Lamido, Nigeria — Renewed violence in the Karim Lamido local government area of Taraba State has left several people dead just weeks after a government committee offered recommendations aimed at resolving longstanding conflicts in the region.
The most recent clashes erupted last week, allegedly stemming from a dispute over ownership of farmland between the Shomo and Wurkun communities in Usmanu village. This surge in violence prompted many residents to flee their homes, rendering what were once bustling communities desolate.
Abner Shittu, a member of the Taraba State House of Assembly representing the Karim Lamido district, acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the state government but implored local residents to take an active role in fostering peace. “The governor is making significant efforts, but it is essential for our people to engage in reconciliation and peace-building,” he said.
Virginia Baba Bambur, chairperson of the Karim Lamido local government, urged all parties involved to engage in dialogue. “Open conversations and cooperative actions are vital for achieving lasting peace and progress in our community,” Bambur stated, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in resolving conflicts.
The Taraba State Police Command confirmed the incidents and noted that conditions are gradually improving. Police spokesperson ASP Victor Mshelizah indicated that patrol efforts are ongoing. However, residents remain wary, reporting that armed groups are still active during nighttime hours, contributing to a continuing sense of insecurity.
In response to the escalated violence, a curfew that was imposed on Karim Lamido town and more than ten surrounding villages has been relaxed, although the threat of conflict persists. Local officials are attempting to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of residents amidst the ongoing tensions.
As the community grapples with the impacts of these clashes, the focus remains on establishing dialogue and understanding among disputing parties, fostering an environment conducive to peace and stability. The continued commitment of local leaders and citizens will be crucial as Taraba State seeks a path forward from this cycle of violence.
