Bathinda, India — Authorities have launched an investigation following a brutal attack on a Zimbabwean student, leaving him in critical condition at a local hospital. Ziweya Leeroy, 22, a newcomer in the Bachelor of Science program for Radiology and Imaging Technology at Guru Kashi University, was severely injured in an assault that escalated from a prior argument.
The police have filed charges against four individuals, including a security guard employed by the university. The formal complaint by a police officer from Talwandi Sabo Police Station outlines multiple serious allegations. These include attempted murder and unlawful assembly, among others, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Those accused include Dilpreet Singh, the security guard, along with Lovepreet Singh, Mangu Singh, and Manpreet Singh.
Preliminary inquiries reveal that an altercation between Leeroy and Dilpreet Singh on August 12 may have sparked the attack. On August 13, Leeroy stepped off the university grounds and was reportedly ambushed by the four suspects. Witnesses claim that they assaulted him with baseball bats and sharp weapons before fleeing the scene.
Bathinda’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Amneet Kondal, confirmed that Mangu Singh was apprehended shortly after the incident. “An FIR has been registered for attempted murder,” she reported. Additionally, Kondal mentioned that authorities received reports of the attack around 4 p.m. Law enforcement is currently in possession of the vehicle used in the suspects’ escape, which was abandoned nearby.
Initially treated for his injuries at Talwandi Sabo Civil Hospital, Leeroy’s condition deteriorated, necessitating his transfer to AIIMS Bathinda, where medical professionals are planning an MRI to evaluate the full extent of his injuries. The university and local community are understandably shaken by the violence, prompting concerns about student safety.
The incident spotlights broader issues regarding the security measures in place for international students. Many are calling for a review of protocols to ensure better protection and support for those studying far from home. The university administration has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities emphasize the importance of accountability and urge witnesses to come forward. The situation remains fluid, with updates expected as law enforcement continues to piece together the events surrounding this alarming incident.
