Violence Erupts in Jericho: Palestinian Families Displaced as Settlers Rampage Through Village

Jericho, West Bank — A Palestinian community in the village of Deir al Dik al-Tahta is reeling after a violent attack by armed Israeli settlers, leading to the evacuation of families from their homes. The confrontation, which unfolded on February 11, saw about 30 masked individuals storm the area using all-terrain vehicles and tractors, forcibly seizing livestock and property.

Local sources indicate that during the daylong assault, settlers stole between 120 to 150 sheep, along with a vehicle and a tractor. Despite calls for assistance to both the Palestinian and Israeli authorities, no help arrived, leaving residents vulnerable to further aggression. Witnesses reported that armed settlers threatened Palestinians, including children, with guns, demanding they vacate the area under the threat of violence.

Physical confrontations ensued, resulting in injuries to ten individuals, including women and children. One person sustained a head injury severe enough to require stitches. Eyewitness accounts describe brutal stone-throwing and assaults that exacerbated fears among the community.

The settlers reportedly demolished 19 structures, including 15 homes, and stole valuables such as jewelry and cash, rendering families homeless. All affected families, which include 15 children, have been displaced and are currently residing in temporary accommodations, too frightened to return to their properties.

The situation in Tel al Samrat, part of the resource-rich Jordan Valley, has been deteriorating over the past two years as violence from settlers has escalated significantly. Numerous residential and agricultural buildings have been destroyed, with large expanses of land designated as “state land” or military zones, limiting Palestinian access and rights to their ancestral territories.

Israeli authorities have recently intensified control over these areas, altering land registration policies in the West Bank. These changes are anticipated to make it easier for settlers to acquire Palestinian land, exacerbating existing tensions and fears of ethnic cleansing in the region.

The village of Deir al Dik al-Tahta, situated within the broader context of increasing settler violence and military expulsions, symbolizes the ongoing struggle faced by many Palestinian communities. The lack of accountability for such acts underscores the precarious nature of life under occupation, raising concerns about justice and the protection of human rights.

As the international community watches the situation unfold, residents of Deir al Dik al-Tahta continue to grapple with the ramifications of displacement and violence, standing firm in their resilience despite the challenges they face. The events in Jericho highlight the ongoing conflict and the urgent need for solutions addressing the rights and safety of Palestinian families.
