Minneapolis, Minnesota — A wave of violence struck south Minneapolis this week, leaving three individuals dead and two others critically injured in a shooting that authorities believe was premeditated and possibly linked to gang activity. The tragic events unfolded late Tuesday night, just hours before a second shooting occurred in the same area, raising fears of retaliation.
Police were alerted shortly before midnight by ShotSpotter technology, which detected gunfire in an alley near Bloomington Avenue South and East 25th Street. Officers arrived to find five victims at the scene. Tragically, three—identified as a teenager, a male adult, and a female adult—were pronounced dead on-site. The two surviving victims, both adults, were rushed to the hospital, with one reported in critical condition, according to Police Chief Brian O’Hara.
“Initial assessments suggest a high likelihood that this shooting was targeted and gang-related,” O’Hara stated at the scene. Investigators quickly noted another incident nearby about an hour later when several shots were fired, though no victims were present. However, evidence of gunfire was discovered, and a short time afterward, a man with gunshot wounds was taken to a local hospital. The connection between these incidents remains uncertain, although authorities believe they may be related.
By Wednesday afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection with the two shootings. A press briefing scheduled to address the increasing violence was postponed due to ongoing investigations into another shooting incident in the 2100 block of Cedar Avenue South. Eyewitnesses reported seeing significant police activity near a body found on the street, as multiple patrol cars congregated at the scene, investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
In a harrowing update, Chief O’Hara confirmed that a man in his 30s was fatally shot while standing outside an SUV, where two children were present in safety seats. The gunfire struck the vehicle but thankfully avoided harming the infants. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey stated that community members fear this shooting could be a retaliatory response to the earlier events.
“We have seen a concerning rise in violence lately that is not representative of the positive trends we’ve recently noted in homicide rates,” Chief O’Hara remarked. “These incidents serve as a stark reminder that much work lies ahead in addressing the safety challenges our community faces.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate both shootings as they seek to identify suspects and uncover the motives behind the violence. Community leaders are urging residents to come forward with any information that might assist police in their efforts to restore peace and security in the area.
