Palatka, Florida — A man with a history of criminal offenses has been sentenced to life in prison following a violent attack on his former partner. Richard Hagans, 35, was found guilty by a jury in Putnam County after a trial that lasted two days, which examined the details of his assault on an ex-girlfriend.
The jury convicted Hagans on multiple charges, including armed burglary, burglary of a dwelling involving damage caused by a vehicle, and resisting arrest without violence. The sentencing is particularly severe, classified under Florida’s Prison Releasee Reoffender statute, which mandates life sentences for repeat offenders committing serious crimes shortly after release.
The incident took place on May 20, 2024, when Hagans deliberately rammed his vehicle into the victim’s house while she was inside. Surveillance footage later captured him searching for her while brandishing a firearm. Fortunately, the victim managed to flee to a neighbor’s home, where she sought help and called 911.
Hagans evaded capture initially but was apprehended days later due to coordinated efforts by law enforcement. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and the Palatka Police Department led the investigation, gathering evidence and statements that ultimately helped secure the conviction.
State Attorney R.J. Larizza expressed relief at the outcome, stating that the case illustrates the commitment of local prosecutors to ensuring community safety. “We are dedicated to holding violent offenders accountable and making sure our neighborhoods are protected,” he said.
