Winnipeg, Canada — A man with a violent past has been implicated in two recent assaults, one of which left a 30-year-old victim unconscious at a local popular gathering space known as The Forks. Daniel Christopher Dumas, 33, is also connected to a series of criminal acts that occurred shortly after the initial attack.
In the incident at The Forks on June 6, Dumas allegedly assaulted the victim and stole his belongings. Witnesses reported that the suspect later threw the stolen items at a woman walking her dog in a nearby area.
Detectives quickly linked Dumas to another random assault at a beer vendor in West Broadway that took place just after midnight on June 7. In that instance, he reportedly attacked a woman in line and stole her purse. Additionally, he is considered a suspect in a break-in that occurred shortly thereafter in River Heights, where he rummaged through a vehicle and attempted to access a home.
Dumas had been released from federal prison under a statutory release on January 2 but violated the conditions of his release, leading to a warrant being issued for his arrest. His history of violent behavior has raised alarms among law enforcement and parole officials alike.
During a review by the Parole Board of Canada in December, Dumas’s lack of remorse and ongoing violent tendencies were noted. He previously served time for his involvement in the 2011 manslaughter of Tyler St. Paul, a fellow inmate who was severely beaten to death during a gang-related attack in a jail northeast of Winnipeg. This violent act resulted in injuries that led to St. Paul’s death from suffocation caused by damaged ribs.
Records indicate that Dumas has exhibited aggressive behavior throughout his incarceration, including multiple assaults on other inmates and incidents of arson within the prison environment. His history of violence has repeatedly put him at odds with authorities, resulting in multiple transfers between correctional facilities.
Conditions of his recent release mandated regular nightly returns to a federal halfway house, adherence to a treatment plan for managing impulsivity and aggression, and abstention from drugs and alcohol. Dumas was also prohibited from engaging with known criminals or families of his previous victims. However, his prior release had ended in violations and further criminal charges, underscoring a concerning pattern.
Law enforcement continues to seek Dumas, who remains at large, and authorities are urging the public to be vigilant. With the ongoing investigations into his recent actions, there are growing concerns about public safety in Winnipeg while he remains unaccounted for.
