Ludhiana, India – Tensions escalated at a local eatery in Moti Nagar when a group of men, reportedly inebriated, unleashed a violent episode upon being asked not to consume alcohol on the premises. The incident, which left the owner injured and a customer robbed, has prompted police intervention and raised concerns about public safety.
According to Moti Nagar Police, the confrontation began when Parminder Singh, the owner of the chicken corner, and his worker, identified only as Babbu, informed the customers that drinking alcohol was against the eatery’s policies. This led to a violent backlash from the group which included Shah Faizal of Hari Kartar Nagar, Jassi Sajan of Shivaji Nagar, and about 20 unidentified men.
The assailants not only attacked Singh and Babbu but also caused extensive damage to the property. In the course of the altercation, a customer, Advocate Gurpreet Singh Bhalla, tried to intervene but was assaulted and had her gold chain with a locket snatched away.
ASI Karamjeet Singh, the investigating officer, stated that the police have lodged a formal complaint and initiated charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, which include causing voluntary harm, snatching, destruction of property, rioting with deadly weapons, and unlawful assembly. Consequently, Shah Faizal has been apprehended while efforts to identify and capture the remaining suspects continue.
This incident not only highlights the challenges faced by small business owners in maintaining decorum and safety but also underscores the broader issue of alcohol-related violence in public spaces. It raises questions about the effectiveness of existing regulations governing alcohol consumption in establishments not licensed to serve it.
Community leaders have voiced their concerns, urging the local authorities to enforce stricter controls and provide better support for businesses against such unruly behavior. Legal experts also suggest that beyond immediate legal proceedings, there needs to be a more comprehensive approach to prevent similar incidents in the future including possibly revising local laws related to public alcohol consumption.
The local community and other small business owners are now urging for a swift response from both law enforcement and civic authorities to safeguard their rights and ensure that such incidents do not recur, emphasizing the need for a safer and more secure environment to conduct business.
