Harvey, Illinois — A weekend shooting incident in south suburban Harvey has left two people dead and seven others, including a young boy, injured. Local authorities have stated that the shooting was part of an ongoing dispute between two groups rather than random violence.
At a press briefing, Deputy Chief Derrick Charles of the Harvey Police emphasized that investigators have a clear understanding of the individuals involved. “We feel confident about identifying those responsible and the motivations behind this violence,” he said. He expressed concern for the innocent victims caught in the crossfire, especially the 4-year-old boy, stating, “We will take action to prevent further violence in our community.”
The shooting unfolded Saturday night at a house party in the 14400 block of Des Plaines Street. Around 8 p.m., two individuals entered the gathering and began firing shots. An armed attendee with a valid concealed carry permit returned fire, fatally wounding one of the assailants. The victim was identified as 24-year-old Charles Lipsey.
The second shooter was also injured and subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition and later arrested. Seven party attendees sustained injuries, but all were reported to be in stable condition as of Monday, according to police reports.
Early Sunday morning, just after 4 a.m., police responded to reports of gunfire in the 200 block of Calumet Boulevard. They discovered a man, identified as 28-year-old Jeremiah R. Astutu-Bofah, shot multiple times in a minivan. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials believe Astutu-Bofah’s death was a retaliatory act linked to the ongoing dispute.
Chief Cameron Biddings remarked that investigators are aware of the individuals creating unrest in the city. “These acts of violence are not random, but stem from a longstanding conflict between certain known individuals in our community,” he explained. He emphasized the commitment to addressing gang-related violence, noting that this issue has plagued the area for too long.
The roots of the recent violence can be traced back to a tragic shooting in 2018 that resulted in the deaths of Bryan Harris and Tejean Hall. Harris was the brother of an 11-year-old girl whose murder in 1998 captured headlines and deeply affected the community. This complex history fuels the ongoing conflicts that law enforcement is now striving to resolve.
Currently, detectives are diligently investigating both shootings and moving forward with potential charges against those implicated. “Our focus is on restoring peace to Harvey,” Biddings said. “We refuse to let violence define who we are as a community.”
Local leaders have called for a collective response to help reclaim safety and peace, encouraging residents to engage in dialogue and support efforts to curb the cycle of violence.
