Police say the victim was not connected to the neighborhood where she was found.
ATLANTA, Ga. — A 36-year-old woman was found shot multiple times inside a vehicle early Wednesday in southeast Atlanta, prompting a homicide investigation after officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 1:30 a.m.
Atlanta police confirmed the woman died at the scene after being shot in the head while inside a car parked in the roadway along Springside Place near Browns Mill Road. Detectives have not identified a suspect or motive, and the case remains in its early stages.
Officers were dispatched to the 2900 block of Springside Place SE after reports of shots fired in the area. When they arrived, they found a vehicle stopped in the middle of the street with the victim inside. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene as investigators began collecting evidence.
Authorities said the woman did not appear to live in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred, raising questions about why she was at that location. Police have not released her name pending notification of family members. A medical examiner later arrived to take custody of the body.
Residents in the area reported hearing several gunshots in the early morning hours. One neighbor said they heard “four or five gunshots” followed by the sound of a vehicle, though it was not immediately clear whether that vehicle was connected to the shooting.
Investigators focused much of their attention on the victim’s vehicle, which remained in the roadway as officers documented the scene. Crime scene tape blocked off part of the street while detectives worked for several hours gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses.
Police have not said whether the shooting was targeted or random, and no suspect description has been released. It also remains unclear whether any surveillance footage from nearby homes or businesses captured the incident.
The case adds to a series of recent violent incidents across parts of Atlanta, though officials have not indicated any connection between those cases and Wednesday’s shooting. Homicide detectives are expected to continue canvassing the area for leads.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Atlanta police, though investigators have not publicly detailed specific leads or persons of interest at this time.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine what led to the deadly shooting and whether additional individuals were involved.
As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests had been announced, and police said updates would be released as new information becomes available.
