Police said the same man also attacked a postal worker before the fatal stabbing.
ATLANTA, Ga. — Atlanta police arrested a 21-year-old man Thursday after they said he stabbed a woman to death along the Atlanta BeltLine and attacked a postal worker earlier in the day.
The killing drew a large police response to one of Atlanta’s best-known walking and biking routes. Authorities said the woman was found shortly after noon near the 1700 block of Flagler Avenue NE, just north of the Montgomery Ferry overpass. She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she died.
Police identified the suspect Friday as Jahmare Brown. He faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony. Officials said Brown was taken into custody Thursday evening after officers saw a man on a bicycle who matched the description of the person wanted in the BeltLine attack.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the first attack happened before the BeltLine stabbing, when a U.S. Postal Service worker was injured on Plasters Avenue. Investigators said the suspect then rode a bicycle toward the trail. Police were called around 12:10 p.m. after reports that a woman had been stabbed. Schierbaum said officers searched the area, released images of the person they were seeking and worked with patrol units across the city.
Mayor Andre Dickens said Thursday night that the suspect was in custody and that city officials were reviewing what led to the attacks. “We are conducting a thorough review of who he is and why this happened,” Dickens said. Police said the arrest happened near St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Peachtree Street in Midtown. Officials said Brown was taken into custody without incident.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim Friday as 23-year-old Alyssa Paige. Police have not released a motive. Investigators described the attacks as random and isolated, but said the case remained active. The BeltLine area near the stabbing was blocked while officers collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.
The BeltLine is a major public trail system that connects neighborhoods, parks, shops and restaurants across Atlanta. The fatal stabbing happened in daylight, raising concern among people who use the trail for commuting, exercise and recreation. Some residents told local reporters they were shaken by the attack because the area is usually busy during the day.
Brown’s next court appearance had not been announced Friday morning. Police said detectives were continuing to review evidence from both scenes and expected to release more details as the investigation moves forward.
