LONG BEACH, CA – A serene afternoon walk in Heartwell Park turned into a nightmare for Tiffany Harrison, 42, when a small plane crash-landed, striking her from behind. Harrison, who is deaf, was unable to hear the approaching aircraft, as confirmed by her mother.
The unexpected incident left Harrison with severe injuries, including fractures to her pelvis and spine. She has undergone several surgeries and blood transfusions, and her condition is currently stable. Her dog, accompanying her during the walk, escaped without injury.
The pilot, Richard A. Schleicher from Palos Verdes, also sustained injuries but is recovering. Schleicher, an experienced aviator and safety instructor, was flying from French Valley to Long Beach Airport when the emergency landing occurred.
Authorities, including the FAA and NTSB, are investigating the crash to determine its cause. Flight records show the plane had departed from Compton earlier in the day.
Carlos Cortez, a local resident, was struck by the proximity of the crash to homes and park visitors, describing the aftermath as both shocking and terrifying. The incident has left the community in disbelief, highlighting the suddenness with which everyday life can be disrupted.
Friends of the pilot returned to the scene the following day to assist in removing the wreckage, a task that drew considerable attention from the community.
As Tiffany Harrison’s family awaits further updates on her condition, the incident serves as a stark reminder of life’s unpredictability and the importance of safety in aviation.
The ongoing investigation seeks to uncover the factors that led to the crash, with a focus on preventing similar incidents in the future.
