Separate federal juries convicted Clint Addleman and Kris Nevling in a package-bomb plot tied to a $1,000 drug debt.
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — A federal judge has sentenced two Pennsylvania men to life in prison for a package bombing that killed a 34-year-old woman and destroyed the Clearfield apartment building where she lived.
U.S. District Judge Stephanie L. Haines imposed the sentences Wednesday on Clint Addleman and Kris Nevling, both 49. Separate juries convicted the men of conspiring to maliciously destroy property with an explosive or fire and possessing an unregistered destructive device. Federal prosecutors said the bombing targeted Shanna Carlson because she owed Addleman about $1,000 for drugs.
The explosion happened on Oct. 4, 2019, inside Carlson’s first-floor apartment on East Market Street in Clearfield. Authorities found her body after the blast caused a fire and destroyed the multiunit rental building. Carlson, who was also known as Shawna, was the only death identified in the government’s account of the case.
Evidence presented at the two trials showed that Addleman and Nevling worked together in early October 2019 to build and possess the bomb, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Investigators said the device was hidden inside a package addressed to Carlson using her nickname.
The package was delivered at about 4:30 a.m. and left outside Carlson’s apartment door, authorities said. It was later taken inside, where it detonated that morning. The blast killed Carlson and started the fire that destroyed the building.
Nevling was convicted at a jury trial in August 2025. Addleman was convicted in a separate trial in March 2026. In addition to the charges both men faced, Addleman was found guilty of malicious destruction of property by explosive or fire resulting in death and conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.
Both juries found that Carlson’s death resulted from the conspiracy to destroy property with an explosive or fire. Addleman’s jury also found that her death resulted from the separate malicious-destruction offense for which he was convicted.
U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti said the two juries reached their verdicts after hearing evidence about the bombing and its connection to the drug debt. He said the life sentences mean both defendants will remain in federal prison for the rest of their lives.
The investigation was led by the ATF with help from the Clearfield Regional Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police and the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators used laboratory analysis and other forensic work to determine that explosives were involved and to develop the case against the two men.
ATF officials described the inquiry as lengthy and complex. The case took nearly six years to reach the first trial and more than six years to reach sentencing. Authorities said the investigation required federal, state and local agencies to assemble physical evidence and establish how the package reached Carlson’s home.
The life sentences close the trial and sentencing phase of a case that began with the destruction of Carlson’s home in October 2019. Federal officials did not announce any additional defendants or further court proceedings in connection with the bombing.
