Rosemead, CA – A young couple from Rosemead has been charged in connection with the tragic death of their one-year-old daughter, which has shaken the community and raised questions about child welfare oversight. Jonathan Salazar, 21, and Leslie Garcia, 20, stand accused of murder and assault on a child causing death following the discovery of their critically injured child earlier this month.
On November 9, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were called to the 2600 block of Strathmore Avenue after receiving reports of an unconscious infant. Upon arrival, deputies and emergency medical teams worked fervently to resuscitate the toddler who was then rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, the child succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead three days later.
Medical examinations indicated the presence of multiple injuries on the toddler, which were not specified but raised immediate concerns about potential abuse. This prompted an in-depth investigation by the LASD Special Victims Bureau alongside the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.
Amidst the investigation, another child from the household was placed into protective custody suggesting broader concerns about the safety of the environment.
Authorities took Garcia into custody on November 12, and she has remained in jail pending further proceedings. Salazar was arrested several days later and also remains incarcerated.
