BRONX, N.Y. — A 23-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a bullet outside a Bronx playground shortly after midnight Thursday, prompting an intensive NYPD investigation into what authorities believe may have been a case of mistaken targeting.
The victim, identified as Reyna Caceres, suffered a gunshot wound to her left eye near Aqueduct Lands Playground in the University Heights section of the borough. Emergency responders rushed her to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Detectives spent much of the day gathering evidence and searching for clues about who fired the shot and why.
Police said officers responded to a 911 call around 12:10 a.m. reporting gunfire near Aqueduct Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Caceres critically injured on the sidewalk outside the playground. Investigators cordoned off portions of the street and nearby recreation area as crime scene technicians documented evidence. Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots echo through the neighborhood moments before officers arrived.
