Knife-wielding man jailed for violent attack at Cork pub

Cork, Ireland – A man from Glencurrig, South Douglas Road, Cork, was sentenced to one year in jail for a violent attack at The Briar Rose pub in Douglas. David White, 44, admitted guilt to two counts of assault causing harm and carrying a knife during the incident on November 12, 2022. Judge Jonathan Dunphy handed down a two-year sentence at the Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

The court heard that White had been drinking at the pub when staff refused him more alcohol due to his intoxicated state. Despite leaving initially, he returned with a boxcutter knife, confronting two employees behind the bar. The situation escalated as he headbutted one of the staff members, causing chaos in the pub.

Customers fled in fear as White was subdued and held until the authorities arrived. Although he claimed the knife was unintentionally in his pocket, he was still found guilty of intentional assault. The accused offered €2,750 in compensation to the victims, who declined to accept it.

Judge Dunphy acknowledged White’s remorse and regret for his actions, recognizing his positive standing in the community and lack of prior police encounters. However, the severity of the incident led to the imposition of a prison sentence. White was described as a valued member of the community in character references submitted to the court.

The judge emphasized that White’s decision to arm himself and attack the bar staff warranted a punitive response. Despite indications of remorse and community support, the court could not overlook the seriousness of the assault. White’s actions had caused significant distress and harm, necessitating a period of incarceration as a consequence of his actions.
