The event, organized by the nonprofit Voices for a Safer Tennessee, aimed to honor the victims of The Covenant School shooting and raise awareness about the prevalence of gun violence in the country.
Approximately 13,000 people were expected to form a four-mile human chain from Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, where some of the shooting victims were treated a year ago, to the state Capitol. The shooting at The Covenant School, which took the lives of three 9-year-old children among others, highlighted the urgent need for action to address the ongoing crisis of gun violence in the United States.
In the past year, there have been numerous incidents of gun violence, including a shooting at an Iowa high school where a sixth-grade student was killed and multiple others were injured. The shooting at The Covenant School, where a former student opened fire with an assault-style rifle, resulted in the deaths of three young students as well as school staff members.
