Twins’ Tragic Death Leads to Charges for Houston Couple in Child Abuse Case

Houston, Texas – A man and woman face charges in connection to the tragic deaths of twin infants in October 2023, as court documents reveal. Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, both 21 years old, have been charged with two counts each of injury to a child-serious bodily injury.

The Houston Police Department responded to a home on Linden Creek Lane following reports of two unresponsive infants. Relatives identified the infants as Massail and Mirena Vega. The children’s father, Vega, found them not breathing in their crib and attempted CPR as instructed by dispatch, but sadly, the premature twins did not survive.

Authorities discovered the infants with discolored skin, multiple bruises, and contusions, one with multiple fractures. An autopsy later revealed that the twins died from injuries inflicted by a blunt object. Shockingly, it was also uncovered that the babies had not received any medical check-ups since leaving the hospital, despite being sick. Calderon, the children’s mother, admitted to the lack of medical care when questioned by police.

Calderon and Vega were identified as suspects and subsequently arrested without incident. Family members expressed mixed emotions, with Calderon’s sister defending her mothering skills while others voiced concerns about past abusive behavior by Vega towards Calderon. Court documents even showed a recent arrest of Vega for restraining Calderon unlawfully.

Witnesses alleged that the children were malnourished and had injuries that dated back several weeks, shedding light on a troubling lack of care and potential abuse. As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the heartbreaking loss of two young lives due to apparent neglect and violence.
