Los Angeles, California – Following the attack on a pro-Palestinian protesters’ encampment at UCLA, Chancellor Gene Block has labeled the incident as “a truly despicable act,” prompting an ongoing investigation.
According to a notice sent out to the UCLA community, Chancellor Block emphasized the importance of identifying and holding accountable those responsible for the violence that occurred on campus. Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Safety Officer Rick Braziel is leading the law enforcement probe to uncover the perpetrators, with assistance from the LAPD and FBI.
The perpetrators, described as “instigators” by Block, violently attacked students, faculty, and staff members advocating for Palestinian rights in the plaza outside Royce Hall. Block stated that finding the responsible individuals and bringing them to justice is a top priority for the university.
In response to the attacks, a new Office of Campus Safety has been established to evaluate the UC Police Department’s response to the violence and enhance UCLA’s security protocols. The Office is also conducting an analysis of all acts of violence that have occurred on campus over the past 12 days.
UCLA senior Adam Jacobsen expressed concerns about the unsettling atmosphere on campus as graduation approaches, describing the current environment as “dystopian” and lacking the usual energy and camaraderie among students.
