Denver, Colorado – Coming up on the 25th anniversary of the tragic Columbine High School shooting, a commemorative vigil is set to take place to honor the memory of the 12 students and one teacher who lost their lives.
Organized by gun safety advocacy groups and other organizations, the vigil will serve as the main public event marking this solemn occasion, with special guests such as former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and Nathan Hochhalter, whose sister was paralyzed in the shooting, expected to speak.
Scheduled to be held near the state Capitol in Denver, the vigil aims to remember all those impacted by the tragedy in a non-political manner. Tom Mauser, a prominent gun safety advocate whose son was a victim of the Columbine shooting, took the initiative to organize the vigil after learning that no large community event was planned by school officials. He believes that marking 25 years since the tragic event is significant and hopes to provide a space for people to come together and reflect.
Reflecting on his advocacy work following the shooting, Mauser led the campaign to require background checks for all firearm buyers at gun shows in Colorado. This effort, inspired by the Columbine tragedy, aimed to close loopholes that allowed individuals to obtain firearms easily.
In light of the failed national proposal for such checks after Columbine, the attention to gun safety ebbed and flowed in the political landscape, resurfacing notably after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. Amidst differing state responses to mass shootings, the issue of gun safety remains a complex and divisive topic.
