To address this burgeoning issue, Anthony “AJ” Monaco, the special agent in charge of the major case unit within the Office of the Inspector General at the Social Security Administration, recently delivered a comprehensive briefing to members of Congress. During his presentation, he discussed the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence and how it could potentially be used to scam Social Security beneficiaries.
An ongoing investigation conducted by the SSA’s Inspector General revealed a shocking instance where an AI-powered chatbot managed to convincingly impersonate beneficiaries and engage with customer service representatives. As a result of this malicious activity, monthly benefit payments were illegally redirected to unauthorized accounts. What’s more, these deceptive chatbot operations were traced back to overseas origins, following the pattern of typical government impersonation scams.
Once the ill-gotten Social Security benefits made their way into the unauthorized accounts, they were strategically funneled into the criminal underworld, thanks to organized networks of “money mules” orchestrating the illicit transfer of funds. Monaco highlighted these disconcerting findings while testifying before the Ways and Means Committee on Social Security. During the session, he detailed the chatbot attack and shed light on the SSA’s comprehensive strategy to counter AI-assisted threats that pose risks to the vital programs and systems of Social Security.
Monaco highlighted the increasing influence of artificial intelligence in different industries and how it can bring about significant changes, while its effects on society are not yet fully understood.
