assault charges considered for St. Louis County teens after violent altercation

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A group of teens, aged between 14 and 17, are facing potential assault charges following a violent altercation captured on video near Hazelwood East High School. The incident left 16-year-old Kaylee Gain with a serious head injury, prompting authorities to take action.

Following a fight that took place after school on March 8 at the intersection of Norgate and Claudine drives, a 15-year-old girl was taken into custody on assault charges. The St. Louis County Police Department revealed that eight more teenagers, including a 17-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl, three 16-year-old boys, two 16-year-old girls, and one 14-year-old girl, were referred to St. Louis County Family Court for consideration of assault charges.

Details emerged from the Hazelwood School District suggesting a separate altercation occurred on school property the day before Kaylee Gain’s injury. One student was suspended as a result, with an attorney for the 15-year-old suspect confirming it was Gain involved in the incident.

St. Louis County Police Col. Kenneth L. Gregory expressed concern over recent violent incidents involving young individuals, referencing both the fight near Hazelwood East and a fatal stabbing in Jennings. He emphasized the need for community engagement and education on resolving conflicts peacefully to prevent further tragedies.

In response to these events, the St. Louis County Police Department has been actively engaging youth through various programs aimed at promoting positive behavior and conflict resolution. They urge parents and citizens to have open discussions with children about the consequences of violence and to seek help when faced with dangerous situations.

As the investigation continues and more teens potentially face charges, the community is called upon to work together in combatting teen violence and creating safer environments for young people. By fostering communication and support networks, efforts can be made to prevent future incidents and protect the well-being of all individuals involved.
