Colombia Travel Advisory: Americans Warned Against Online Dating Apps Due to Series of “Suspicious Deaths”

The U.S. State Department is cautioning Americans against using online dating apps while visiting Colombia, citing multiple “suspicious deaths” that occurred in the country. Over the final months of 2023, eight U.S. citizens died from involuntary drug overdoses or suspected homicides in Medellin, Colombia. Although officials do not believe the deaths are connected, several victims had used online dating apps before being robbed, drugged, or killed.

According to the State Department, criminals in Colombia use dating apps to lure victims to public places such as hotels, restaurants, and bars, where they are then assaulted and robbed. The U.S. Embassy in Colombia has reported an increase in these incidents, particularly in big cities like Medellin, Cartagena, and Bogota. However, such crimes are often underreported due to victims’ embarrassment or reluctance to face the judicial process.

In addition, thefts targeting foreign visitors in Colombia increased by 200% in late 2023 compared to the previous year, with a 29% rise in violent deaths of foreign visitors—mostly U.S. citizens. As a result, the State Department has placed Colombia under a Level 3 “reconsider travel” advisory due to the high levels of violent crime and terrorism in certain parts of the country.

For travelers considering the use of dating apps in Colombia, the State Department recommends meeting strangers only in public places, informing a friend or family member of their plans, and avoiding resistance during robbery attempts. Additionally, the Embassy advises establishing a policy with door attendants or concierges for visitors to provide identification before being allowed entry to a residence or hotel room.

The increase in violent crimes against U.S. citizens in Colombia has prompted the State Department to issue these warnings and safety tips for travelers to the South American country. As the U.S. government continues to monitor the situation, they advise all Americans to exercise caution and be aware of the potential risks associated with using dating apps while in Colombia.
