Los Angeles, California – A veteran Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy has tragically passed away six months after sustaining severe burns in a fire at a mobile shooting range operated by the department, as confirmed on Sunday by a family spokesperson.
Alfredo “Freddy” Flores, 51 years old, from Sylmar, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday evening at the Valley Presbyterian Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for third-degree burns incurred during a fire at the Castaic facility in October. A fellow deputy, who was serving as the range master, was also injured in the incident.
Flores, with 22 years of service under his belt, had been stationed at various facilities, including the North County Correctional Facility, Altadena Station, and Court Services West Bureau. Described as a well-respected figure within the department and the community, his untimely passing has deeply affected those who knew him, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Following the incident, the department took measures to investigate the cause of the fire, which broke out in the trailer being used for recertification training purposes. The department has since suspended all activities at its mobile firing ranges, launched an internal investigation, and enlisted the help of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
This unfortunate event marks at least the fourth occasion in recent years where a Sheriff’s Department mobile range has been involved in a fire-related incident. In response to Flores’ passing, tributes have poured in from various quarters, acknowledging his dedication to serving the community and the ultimate sacrifice he made. While expressing gratitude for the department’s decision to halt the use of mobile shooting ranges, Flores’ family spokesperson hinted at the possibility of exploring legal recourse in the wake of the tragedy.
