Tanzania: Deadly Outbreak Linked to Sea Turtle Meat Consumption

GALLE, Sri Lanka – A green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) has been spotted on a beach in Galle, Sri Lanka, captivating residents with its presence and highlighting the beauty of marine life in the region.

Authorities in Zanzibar, Tanzania, revealed a heartbreaking incident where several individuals either died or fell ill after consuming sea turtle meat on Pemba Island. Tragically, eight children and an adult lost their lives, while 78 others required hospitalization.

Sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy in Zanzibar, with locals treasuring it as a special treat. However, the consumption of the turtle meat led to a severe case of chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning that proved fatal for many.

Medical officer Dr. Haji Bakari reported that laboratory tests confirmed the link between the victims and the consumption of sea turtle meat. This revelation shed light on the dangers of consuming such exotic delicacies without proper knowledge of the potential risks involved.

In response to the incident, authorities in Zanzibar dispatched a disaster management team led by Hamza Hassan Juma to raise awareness and caution against consuming sea turtles. This preventative measure aims to protect residents from falling victim to similar tragedies in the future.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time such a tragedy has struck Pemba Island. In November 2021, a similar incident occurred where seven individuals, including a 3-year-old child, lost their lives after consuming turtle meat, with three others requiring hospitalization.

The recurrence of such incidents underscores the importance of educating the public on the potential dangers of consuming certain types of wildlife. The need for awareness and caution in culinary choices is crucial to prevent further loss of life and ensure the well-being of communities in Zanzibar and beyond.

As authorities continue their efforts to address the aftermath of the sea turtle meat consumption incident, the community mourns the lives lost and reflects on the importance of responsible dining choices to protect both human health and precious marine species.
